C.S. Lewis writes that humans are designed to love both change and consistency, so God created the seasons. A new season both delights in its newness, and welcomes us like an old friend. There are few greater pleasures when it does.
Here are a few of my favorite things at the end of this spring/entrance of summer:
Fiddle Hen Ferns:
Love these! Gorgeous fiddle hen ferns, which, when sauteed with garlic and olive oil are such a treat. They remind me of Kale, since the stalk is hearty, but there is something tender about them too, the leaves like butterflies on your tongue.
Heirloom Tomatoes:
I love the smaller version because they are bursting with flavor but so versatile.
These beautiful shapes and colors are delicious with mozzarella, basil, olive oil and balsalmic with plenty of salt.
Also, roasted at 400 for 20 min. with olive oil and salt is fantastic. See Ina Garten’s how to here.
Local Strawberries:
I find myself compulsively offering these to my kids because these are such a childhood food memory of what summer tasted like. I need to make sure it is ingrained in their food memories.
Did you know that they are amazing with Sour Cream and Brown Sugar? Who would have thought.
I have been also searching for a great Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp recipe. Think this one looks good (of course I will post this when I make it).

Chives:
I love having these at my disposal any time I want. When the first frost comes I miss them the most, it is such an indulgence. I put them in everything – bagels, eggs, salads, soups. When they arrive, I know summer is almost here.
Champagne!!!!!!!!!
What were you expecting, radishes? Those are good too.
But I love this stuff.
You’ll notice snow on the ground, so this picture is a few months old, but I am adding it anyway. (My husband bought it for the completion of my first draft on a novel…crazy & sweet!) It is a great reminder of what we are leaving behind (snow) and what we are looking forward too (drinking Veuve Clicquot).
Last but not least….
I really love reading, and in the last 2 years, this book has spell bound me like no other. (Here other book Bel Canto is a close second).
Serve preferably on a Hammock or on a beach, in mid-afternoon summer sun
Here is welcoming you to a great summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!
